Looking back at my Need-to-See Movies List, I realize that I've seen "Underworld: Evolution" (very good) at the $2 Theater with Mike and Darren sometime... and Mike now owns "Corpse Bride" (good but predictable) which we've all watched. Huh...
“V for Narnia: The Goblet of Fire” a Movie Update
Two weeks ago, Melissa came to see me :) We went out for lunch at Famous Dave's and Mojo met us there! After we ate, Mel and I went to see "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". Mojo (who watches "Charmed") didn't want to go see HP4 because of the subject matter. I never have and never will read the Harry Potter books.
I saw the first movie with Kristy way back when and now I feel obligated to see the rest of them for the sake of completeness. This movie was not the best of the four. It was mostly the Tri-Wizard tournament (with 4 wizards) and then some story at the end about the bad guy. Not very good.
After the movie, we went to K-Mart's closing sale and then we parted ways with Mel leaving me an aloe plant :)
I've seen "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" twice now. On St. Patty's day, I went out by myself for dinner and a movie. (How lame, right?) I saw Narnia at the $2 theater. I saw it again later with Mike and Darren. It was quite enjoyable and I didn't mind seeing it a second time.
I haven't read the book since sixth grade, so throughout the movie, I'd find myself surprised by scenes I had forgotten. I hope they make the other six books into a movie too. I won't wait as long to see those!
I didn't find "V For Vendetta" particularly entertaining. Mike, Darren and I saw it. They probably shouldn't have. It's pretty much all they've been talking about since we saw it. I wanted to leave as soon as the lights dimmed and the DC Comics logo showed up on the screen.
The movie's about politics and "good" terrorism. Not my cup of tea. Sure, there was some action, but it didn't make up for the dryness.
Who were the people interrogating Natalie Portman's character while V held her captive?
Magic: The Gathering
Saturday, I went to my very first Magic: The Gathering tournament (my second tournament ever. I was in a Pokémon tournament once many years ago). It wasn't sanctioned or anything, but it was fun. I came in second place. I got into Magic back in junior high and have been playing ever since. My prize was a Fat Pack of Core Set 9th Edition but I gave away everything but the cards that came in it :)
The tournament consisted of 3 rounds. In the first round, I won the first two matches no problem. Chris played a Blue/Black/Green Kukoshu deck. In the second round, I lost the first match but won the second two no problem. Jake was playing a Green/White deck. The final round was my only real concern because both I and my opponent were previously undefeated. Steven was playing a Green/White deck. I was demolished the first match. In the second match, I quickly pummeled him. In the third match, he managed to play a Worship and since I had no enchantment removal spells, I conceded.
I had fun and I hope to play with my new friends again :)
Movies I Really Need And/Or Want To See But Haven't (Yet...)
For some reason or another, I haven't seen these movies yet (in no particular order):
- Troy
- Kingdom of Heaven
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
- The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
- The Interpreter
- Brokeback Mountain
- Underworld: Evolution
- Final Destination 3
- Four Brothers
- Corpse Bride
Some of these are still in theaters. Maybe I'll go see them soon...
Hostel
Wow. I just got back from "Hostel" (yes, the movie was at 11:15; it wasn't that long, I had car problems after a Slurpee stop). All I can say is that it was a great movie. The first part is sex sex sex. The sencond part is gore gore gore. The third part is run run run and finally, the conclusion is fitting (fitting fitting ?)
If you like suspense, this movie's for you. If you're ok with blood and gore but not sex (I'm looking at you, Mojo), you'll want to cover your eyes and plug your ears for the first thirty minutes or so. If dismemberment and disembowelment aren't your thing but you love sex, watch the first thirty minutes or so, then go toss your rocks in the bathroom and go enjoy the rest of the evening.
My complaints are that the movie gets off to a slow start and rushes a bit at the end. Also, this isn't so much a horror movie. Sure, it's kinda scary in parts, but it's pure thriller.
On a scale of one to ten, I would give it a 7. I'd watch it again as a rental and I recommend it to anybody who likes thrillers and is ok with sex and gore.
